HAIL REDSKINS FANS!
Outstanding job on both sides of the ball on an emotional Sunday for all at Fedex Field, and watching on national television as our Redskins topped the New York Football Giants in the 2011 season opener. Newly annointed starting QB Rex Grossman played well, throwing for over 300 yards, and playing within the game plan, keeping the ball away from Eli and the Giants for much of the first half, stopping them on third down the rest of the time.
Rookie Ryan Kerrigan tipped and intercepted an Eli ball in a play that had us all cheering, rumbling in for the tie-breaking touchdown! The Burgundy & Gold never looked back, adding another TD late to provide some breathing room in a victory that snapped a 6-game winning streak by the Giants over the Redskins. The victory put our Redskins in first place after the opening salvo of the 2011 season, a nice place to be.
This week brings some reunions of sort, as ex-Eagle Kevin Kolb comes to town with our starting RB’s old team, the Arizona Cardinals. The success our Offensive Line had in protecting “Good” Rex last week should continue as the Cardinals were unable to mount much pressure last week against the rookie-led Panthers. Tim Hightower will definitely want to “thank” his former team properly, and our receiving corps is much more dynamic than the one-horse pony that Carolina trotted out last week. So I look for good things on the Offensive side of the ball, provided that protection holds up.
Defensively, Larry Fitzgerald should draw double coverage all day, which means the guy single-covering Early Doucet will need to be sharp, but history has shown that if you get in early on Kolb, he gets that glassy-eyed, thousand-yard stare we all know so much from our time with Heath Shuler and Gus Frerrotte. We have the guys to bring that pressure and I am expecting them to make their presence known early and forcefully.
All in all, this is a favorable matchup for our guys, so dare I say it - - we should be 2 -0 after this weekend!
