IF THEY HAD DONE WHAT I TOLD THEM TO DO . . .

We may have come away with a victory Sunday, but as we all painfully witnessed, our beloved Skins were not able to put any pressure on Manning, run the ball effectively, hold onto interceptions, or kick field goals.  We spent the whole day just shooting ourselves in the thigh . . . wait, wrong team!

I am starting to be a little concerned about Zorn’s inability to motivate our guys.  There was so much on the line in this game: revenge for the week 1 loss; division rival; national audience (more on that later); the energy from Sean’s induction; and, oh yes . . . a shot at the playoffs!  We had five three-and-outs in the first quarter alone!  And can anyone tell me when the last time Suisham has made a clutch FG that was more than 29 yards?  If we go into the half down 13-10 with some momentum, who knows what happens in the second half! But we came out flat and listless, and were only able to move the ball in the air once the game was out of reach.  Clinton was held to a season-low 22 yards, and is questionable for Sunday Night’s tilt with the Ravens, with knee and neck injuries.  I bring his run total up for this reason:  trailing 20-7 with 10:39 in the fourth quarter, we faced a 4 and 1 from our own 39, and Zorn goes for it!  What did he possibly see that made him think we’d get the yard?  We had failed on the previous play, and while I admire his more open style after Gibbs’ conservative style, we were only down TWO scores.  Punt the ball and play field position.  We gave them the ball in FG range, and they didn’t move it far, but they didn’t need to in order to move into range for the game-icing kick.

This week’s opponent poses many problems for the Skins’ offense. We seem to have trouble against 3-4 defenses, and Baltimore has one of the best.  They give up on average only 15 points a game on defense, and hold opponents to 78 yards a game on the ground. Their pass defense is ranked second in the conference, averaging just 175 yards per game.

But what scares me the most is that NBC flexed this game, and we will once again be on national television where we are a combined 0-3, having been outscored 53-24.  The good news is that the game is in Baltimore, and with our road record standing at 4-1, I have some hope.  Do you realize the Skins are 3-4 at home?  RFK, we miss ya . . .

Okay, now down to business.  This game should be very low scoring, and hopefully London Fletcher will be able to play.  He hasn’t practiced all week and will be a game-time decision, but we need his leadership and tackling prowess.  Shawn Springs re-injured his calf and is probably out, so DeAngelo and Fred will have to step up. Ravens’ QB Joe Flacco has been improving each week, but is still a Rookie, and we need to pressure him to see how he handles the stress of a national spotlight game in December with playoff implications.  I still think we have the talent, and if our offense can hit a few big plays (calling Santana Moss!) and loosen things up, then Portis can find some holes to run through and we can work our way back into the win column.
