Before the season began, if anyone had told me my beloved Redskins would be 2-1 after the third week of the season, I would have been ecstatic.  And after three weeks, there are many positives to be excited about:

First, our throwback unis are way cooler than the Easter outfits the Eagles wore to mark their 75th Anniversary.  What grown man wears pastels on the football field??  Have some pride.

Special teams

For the first time since Chip Lohmiller left, I don't leave the room to grab my rosary when we line up for a FG longer than 27 yards.

The patience in Derrick has paid off, and he is one of the best punters in the NFC - -  No jokes about having had enough practice the last few years.

In Antwaan we have a punt returner we haven’t had since . . . well ever!   . . . with all do respect, of course, to Darrell Green in the ’87 playoffs against the Bears.

And while Rock won’t win many time trials, I feel very confident with him returning kick-offs.

Offense

Jason continues to gain more confidence in himself and in the Offense each week.  Even with our two best linemen going down, the O-line has been stellar.  The Pete Kendall trade may be the best one of the second Gibbs’ era, and the receivers are what we imagined they’d be last year.

Defense

While not quite back to the form of 2005, there is marked improvement over last year.  I don’t put much stock in all the "experts" harping on our lack of turnovers.  With our primarily man-to-man style, we aren’t going to get a lot of INTs.  And while I would like to see more of a pass rush, I’ll take the 3-and-outs our defense was producing the first 2 and half games of the season…

And while we do have many positives to be ecstatic about - - I must quote the God of my world, Bruce Springsteen, when I say the Giants game was one-step up and two-steps back.

What impressed me so much during Gibbs’ first tenure in DC was his ability to adjust - - as long as the Skins were within 21 points, I always felt we were going to win.  Whether we were on offense or defense to start the second half, I knew we would set the tone for the rest of the game . . . NOT so Sept. 23.  One problem I have noticed during Joe’s second tour of duty is an inability to go for the jugular when we have a lead.  We came out flat for the second half instead of fired-up at the prospect of beating a division foe, and with that effectively knock the Giants out of the race.  AT HOME NO LESS!  The defense resorted back to the “highlight” reel hits instead of sure tackling (how does Plastico Burress on a bad ankle run for that TD?)  and the offense was nonexistent.  And I for one would love to see more Betts and less Portis.  Ladell seems better suited for our offense and doesn’t have the paper mache health quality that Portis seems to posses.  I just don’t have faith that the guy is going to answer the bell.

While Jason has gotten a lot of criticism for the final minute of the game, I feel you have to place the blame squarely at Gibbs’ feet.  He took the duties from Saunders (why??) for the final series and showed no imagination.  You can’t waste downs at the end of the game, so why call the spike.  THROW the ball in the end zone.  It is either going to be caught or incomplete to stop the clock, and you are able to regroup in the huddle instead of having to stay with the two running plays you called because that is all time will allow.   AAARRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

But it is a long season and we can get back in the "W" column this week against the Lions at home.  I am usually not a big fan of stats, but it is tough to ignore Detroit’s 0-20 record in the Nation’s Capital.  With two weeks to prepare, I am sure Greg will have the defense ready for Kitna and company. Through four games, the Lions are averaging a paltry 73 yards per game on the ground, so if we can stop Kitna, we’ll be fine.  The Lions' defense is allowing an average of 31 points a game - - 280 yards passing and 115 rushing - - so on paper they don’t seem to present much of a challenge for Jason and the Sons of Wash-ing-ton . . . Rah Rah Rah!

We win easily this week, and then it is on to the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field . . . I only hope I can find my well-worn Redskins football that I chucked some 50 yards in disgust during the second half the Giants game . . . HAIL!!!!!!!!!!
