SAME SHTUFF ~ DIFFERENT DAY!

What could have and probably should have been was not to be, again! Today I will not attempt to dazzle you with statistics or trends ~ you have ESPN for that. Plus I couldn't do that near as well as John Priddy, so I won't try ~ I'll just shtick to my game plan!

For the second week in a row, we have played a "so called " better AFC West team, on the road, have totally dominated every statistical category and still wound up losing! In Denver, the best players wore black and white, not orange and blue, as the refs totally hosed us out of a win. But I don't have $10,000 to pay for my comments so I'll move on. In KC, we must have still had BBQ sauce on our hands from the previous night's dinner as we pretty much fumbled ourselves to death (which is another statistical category in which we dominated). Three turnovers, one taken back for a touchdown, one that took at least a field goal away from us on the first drive. If you told me that we would have held Priest Holmes to 18 yards rushing, Tony Gonzales to 13 yards receiving, Dante Hall to a 1.0 yard average on punt returns, scored 21 points and still lost ~~ I would have told you that you were certifiable. OK, maybe some stats.

With that said I still like this team, I like them A LOT (say it like Jim Carrey in Dumb & Dumber, please)! Even when we shoot ourselves in the foot, this team bounces back. Our offense looks better and more confident each week, Santana Moss IS THE MAN (make no bones about that), and we WILL start to covert in the Red Zone - I can feel it! Mark Brunell said in the postgame that he had a WR wide open in the end zone for a sure TD on the first drive - but he didn't step up quick enough in the pocket before it collapsed - then he fumbled. I think that Joe Gibbs' offensive genius is starting to show, and our opponents are seeing it. John Lynch said after the Denver game, "They [the Redskins] are a solid team that will be in the middle of things in the end. They gave us all that we could handle; they are a good football team." Since the 4th quarter of the Dallas game, our offense has been the reason we have won and have been in these games that we've lost.

So what about our Defense? The D is still solid too - 5th in the NFL - but without causing turnovers, we won't win. We need to start causing those turnovers, and we need a spark. It's not like we didn't have a chance on Sunday -- we did. We had a number of touches, but no one could hang onto the ball when they touched it. Which brings me to the obvious topic, one that won't go away and will become bigger with each loss. Where is LaVar? We all have heard the reasons behind his benching (or at least what they want us to hear), but something isn't adding up. After the Denver game, Gregg Williams said that LaVar has been trying in practice. LaVar has stated he wants to play. My take???? You play him. Somehow, someway, you work him in. Unless he has an unbelievable attitude problem (it can't be worse than T.O.), you play him. Now please know that I applaud Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams for having the fortitude to not let one individual be bigger than the team, but is he truly the 4th best LB on this team??? Marvin Lewis made a comment that LaVar was one of the most undisciplined players he has ever coached. But Marvin worked him in! By freeing him up in blitz packages to rush the QB (hey, a pass rush - we could use that!), he worked LaVar in to his system. Just so happened that LaVar made the Pro Bowl that year. There comes a time as a coach you have to utilize all of your talent to help the team win (unless you have no choice at all). Put him in -- if he contributes positively, then increase his time. If he impacts the defense negatively, put him back on the pine. But not playing him at all, not one play on Defense? I don't know all the facts, but from what I do know it seems more personal than sheer X's and O's to me. Right now we have a huge defensive talent on the bench, and a talented defense on the field in need of a spark. Maybe, just maybe, LaVar could be that spark.

All in all we are 3 - 2, no doubt moving in the right direction, still in first place in a wide open NFC East Division, and I like our chances. When you look at our schedule, don't you start to get this feeling that we have a good chance of beating any team that we have left to play? It sure feels good being a Redskins fan!!! But then again, when didn't it?
