New Season . . . . . Familiar Faces!!

Our Washington Redskins will start the 2004 Season against the last team we battled in the playoffs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But this year's Bucs are a very different team from the team that dominated the NFC South for the last couple of years. They have become the "Gulf Coast" version of the Oakland Raiders, with numerous players from both teams trading places. Arriving on Florida’s Gulf Coast are over-the-hill offensive liabilities Charlie Garner and Tim Brown. Gone from the Bucs to the Raiders is defensive stalwart Warren Sapp. Another rumored player to be making the move could be aged QB Rich Gannon, who would join a Tampa QB derby already crowded with Brad Johnson, Brian Griese, and Chris Simms (who is my pick as the best WB on the roster). The receiver corps for Tampa is very thin, with Keenan McCardell the only real threat as Joe Jerevicius is coming off an injury-riddled 2003, and Tim Brown can’t get separation from ANY cornerbacks. Their running back situation is not much better, with Charlie Garner losing several steps in the past two years, and Michael Pittman not being anything to write home about. The Bucs' defense has lost two of its emotional leaders, with John Lynch and Warren Sapp moving on, so our offensive arsenal should be able to be successful all day long, regardless of who is under center for the Burgundy and Gold.

This will be a good test for the New / Old Coaching Staff of Gibbs, Williams, and Bugel, but the efficiency and attention to detail that they bring to the locker room and the playing field should make this a very enjoyable and hopefully extended season for our Redskins!
