!! OLD FRIENDS IN NEW PLACES !!

LAST WEEK: Isn't it amazing how many good things can happen when the Quarterback has time to throw the football!! This is exactly what we saw Sunday in our thrilling 27-20 victory over the NFC Western Division leading Seattle Seahawks. Ray Rhodes' defense did not blitz as much as we have become accustomed to seeing, and consequently Patrick Ramsey had plenty of time to throw the ball. The strong running of Rock Cartwright also took a lot of pressure off the passing game, consistently getting us tough yards when we needed them. Rod Gardner also emerged from the shadows he has been lost in lately, posting two touchdowns, including the game winning pass to a wide-open Trung Candidate in the 4th quarter (was that SWEET or what??). Offensive Coordinator Hue Jackson took over the play calling duties at Coach Spurrier's request this week, and with the success we enjoyed, he will be handling those duties for the foreseeable future. A couple of gutsy calls in key situations were Coach Spurrier's input, and it worked out for the best as we saved our season (for this week) with an absolutely crucial victory over a highly regarded opponent.

THIS WEEK: We travel down the coast a little ways to take on the Division-Leading Carolina Panthers and their NFL leading running back Stephen Davis. Last time we faced good old number 48 in the preseason, he torched us in limited playing time. At that time, he also promised an even bigger bang when the regular season match-up rolled around. However, as we have become accustomed to seeing at this crucial part of the season, Stephen Davis is nicked up with an ankle injury, and should be a game-time decision to play or not. If he plays, he will be a tough load to stop with our front four, but his backup, Deshaun Foster, is no slouch either. So either way, we will get a strong dose of smashmouth football this week ... ... it used to be that we could give as good as we got down in the trenches of a battle like this, so let's see if our guys are up to it. Coach Spurrier gained a lot of respect last week from the players with his stepping back from the play calling and his two gutsy decisions late in the game, so let's hope that translates into better discipline on the field. We will need it against the Panthers' strong defense. First and 15 too many times could spell a very long afternoon for the Burgundy and Gold. The Cowboys have a tough night game in New England, and the Eagles will have their hands full with a desperate New York Giants squad, so this game is incredibly important to our postseason plans! We had a great crowd last Sunday, so come on out to Austin Avenue early and cheer our Redskins on to victory!
