A Wild Ride to the Top!!!

The Redskins put on a serious Jekyll & Hyde act last Sunday in Atlanta, falling behind 17-0 in the first half before STORMING back with OFFENSIVE EXPLOSIONS from Patrick Ramsey (356 yds), Laveraneus Coles (180 yds), and Rod Gardner (116 yds) en route to a wild 33-31 Win! This vaults the Skins to their first 2-0 start since 1991! Coupled with the Monday Night debacle at the Meadowlands, our Redskins are now in sole possession of First Place in the NFC East! The defense played a HUGE part in this game as they stiffened after the early hole, and invigorated the rest of the team (especially Bruce Smith) with the attitude necessary to stop the bleeding and fight their way back into the game. John Hall also proved he is worth his weight in gold, kicking yet another long field goal. The offensive line is still a concern with neither Chris Samuels or Jon Jansen playing up to their potential. We are giving up too much pressure from the sides, which contributed to the early deficit. Ramsey fought through it though and put on a clinic in the second half, with Coles paying dividends once again by stretching the field and fighting back from two injuries to provide the needed firepower. Coles' speed is also opening up Rod Gardner as evidenced by Rod's 100+ yards.

Even though the game was on local TV, we had a great crowd at Austin Avenue to witness the monster comeback and thrilling victory! There is nothing quite like being in a crowd full of Roaring Burgundy & Gold Fans when you have a game like that.........

This week is shaping up to be a HUGE early-season battle as the wounded G-Men come to Fed Ex Field. The Giants will be working off of a short week and the demoralizing loss to the Cowboys, so we should be able to put them down by a full two games, while gaining a half game on the Cowboys and Eagles, who are both on an early bye week. The Giants' corners were exposed Monday Night, so our wideouts should have a field day. Their special teams have a familiar face in ex-Redskin/ex-Eagle Brian Mitchell that we must do a better job of containing.

The weather may be a factor come Sunday, with Hurricane Isabel threatening to come ashore in North Carolina Thursday evening. If the heavy rain being forecasted is still around Sunday, then we may have to rely more on our multi-headed running attack of Betts, Candidate, and Morton. The G-Men are stout against the run, so hope for the storm to miss the D.C. area (doubtful) so we can unleash the Aerial Assault. We also need to cut down on the penalties of the last two weeks, but the friendly confines of Fed Ex Field should help us in that regard.

This is a late game, so we will need to get there and stake out our seats as early as possible. We will have another great "sassy" raffle at halftime, followed by our Trivia Challenge, and continuously enjoy the great food, drink, and service from the Austin Avenue Staff. Again, the game may be on local television, but don't let that stop you from coming out to Austin Avenue and cheering the FIRST PLACE Burgundy & Gold onto victory against the Hated Giants.
