NEW ORLEANS SAINTS @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2003 ~ 3:05 P.M.
Burgundy & Gold Fan Club ~~ Austin Avenue

A STRONG EFFORT THAT ENDED TOO SOON!

For three quarters Sunday night, the Washington Redskins looked like the team we expected at the beginning of the season ~~ moving the ball efficiently down the field, stuffing the opposing defense, and building a sizable lead over a quality opponent. Tim Hasselbeck filled in admirably for a banged up Patrick Ramsey (nothing serious on the Patrick front), and all cylinders seeemed to be firing in sync. But then Jay Fiedler came into the game to a thunderous ovation form the Miami fans, and our defense reverted back to their selfish play that has seen this talented group of individuals fall to the bottom tier of defenses in the NFL. Ricky Williams and the Dolphins took advantage of the situation and rallied for 14 unanswered points, and punctuated it with a fumble recovery on a punt with 2 minutes to go that could have given us a chance to win. The loss effectively wipes out any chance of the playoffs this year. However, there are still some bright spots.....a good discussion is available at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11595-2003Nov24.html.

This week the Saints come marching in. We have chance to seriously damage their playoff dreams, and since I don't have any Saints on my fantasy team, I would love to see us deliver a post-holiday beating to the boys from Bourbon Street. Hopefully we can get a good crowd out at Austin Avenue ... ... you will all be tired of leftovers and your extended family, so take a break and come on out to support the Burgundy and Gold. ..............................by John Priddy

O P T I M I S M !

You may ask ~~ why is the title of this article "Optimism?" Well, we played well for two and a half quarters this past Sunday, and when we thought, "oh no, Patrick is out" and we would definitely lose the game, Tim Hasselbeck came in, played well and we had a chance to win. I think our problem in this game, as in almost every game, was that we did not play four quarters and did not convert the turnovers into touchdowns. We had very few penalties, and protected the QB fairly well. We need to say congratulations to Bruce Smith for tying Reggie White's sack record. Hopefully we can get him the sack record outright that he deserves, and at home.

This week we play the New Orleans Saints, who have been playing well the past couple of weeks. We can definitely win this game if we play as well as we did against Miami for four whole quarters and convert the turnovers into TD's and not field goals. Patrick is questionable for the game, with his foot injury and concussion; however, we have gained faith in Tim. Chris Samuels is out for the game, but we have signed an offensive lineman. The question mark is who will be the tailback this week ~~ Ladell (questionable), Rock (questionable), Chad, Trung, or John Simon (a second year man that Spurrier wants to get some playing time). I hope everyone has a Great and Happy Thanksgiving, and be safe with all your travels. Make sure to come out and join us on Sunday! ................................by Scott Howerton

SOUND OFF FROM OUR SKINS FANS!

Well, well, well, here we go again. Can this expensive defense stop somebody when they REALLY need to? NO!! During the course of the game, did anyone hear the name Armstead or maybe Smoot mentioned just ONE time? NO! Jesse, please retire, and take Bruce Smith with you. You real football fans know Mr. Smith arrived a second too late on his record tying sack, don't you? But they gave it to him anyway! If you don't believe me, watch it again; that was not Bruce's half sack. Oh yeah, Mr. Spurrier, the Run 'N Gun, looks more like the Stun 'N Done! You think the big difference was the Dolphins changing QB's? C'mon, you knew it was just a matter of time until the defense folded. Jay Fiedler or Arthur Fiedler, it didn't matter!! But I guess the real clincher was when my dear sainted 80-year-old Mother -- who sees coach Spermier covering his mouth in order to keep spies from reading his lips and discovering what really neat double reverse or triple pitchout he is about to fool the defense with -- looks at me and says, "What the HELL does anyone care what he calls? Anyone with beady eyes and that sickening little grimace-like smirk on his face is not my kind of a "ball coach"! Go figure!! So with all that said, I'll probably see ya at the next game. HAIL TO THEM!! ....................by Phil Carver
