FOR ALL YOU SESAME STREET FANS . . .

Today’s column is brought to you by the word “ugly.”  The weather was ugly, the Steeler uniforms were ugly (bordering on hideous) and, ugliest of all, the play of our Redskins.  When the PAT following our first - and only - TD was blocked, I turned to my partner and said, “This is going to get ugly.”  If only I was so prophetic when choosing lotto numbers!

The best thing to do with this game is chalk it up to “You win some; you lose some,” and just move on.

Our guys were out of synch all day, dropping passes, blowing coverages, allowing Big Ben to extend plays.  And the play calling was, let’s just say, suspect at times.  Who sends their franchise QB on a pass pattern where Ryan (I’m still bitter towards the Redskins) Clark is in the stadium, much less in coverage, and can take a shot?  Fortunately, the Shanahans understood the error of their ways and said they felt like “dumb s***s” after the play was over.  Ya think?

Of course the ugliest play of the game was DeAngelo Hall’s meltdown against the ref.  This is just my opinion, but DeAngelo needs to go bye-bye. His MO in the past was someone who would get beat, but would come up with the big INT when it counted.  Now he just gets beat and runs his mouth.  I know we’re woefully thin in the secondary, but this isn’t working; so let’s give someone else a try . . . it can’t hurt!

There were a few positives from the game.  Last week’s Rookie of the Week, Alfred Morris’ 4.5 yards per carry, the return of fan favorite Chris Cooley, and Kai Forbath was 3 for 3 in FG attempts. Kai has yet to miss since signing with the B&G.  Isn’t it nice not to have that feeling in the pit of your stomach when we line up for a FG?  Interesting little note, Forbath is 5 for 5 in attempts over 40 yards, but has only attempted 1 FG -  which he drilled - under 40 yards!  Apparently we either score TDs or kick long FGs when we enter our opponents’ end of the field!

Okay, so let’s have a pact to never again discuss last week’s game and move on to this week.  The Skins play a 1-7 Panthers team at home, and on paper we should win the game.  Early pressure on Cam Newton is the key.  If we can rattle him, we can force him into mistakes, setting up good field position for our offense, and I like our offense vs. their defense.  I predict we win this game going away, and move into the bye with a great attitude and a chance to get everyone healthy for the second half.

I am still very excited about where this team is going.  Injuries have been brutal, but we can still achieve 8-8 this season, which we can build upon for next season.
