Sunday in New Orleans, the Washington Redskins began their climb to relevancy with a spirited effort against the perennial power New Orleans Saints. Led by the NFC Offensive Player of the Week, Rookie QB Robert Griffin III, the Burgundy & Gold came out punching on both Offense and Defense, keeping the Saints and their substitute coaching staff off guard all day. From the very first drive, this was a different Redskins team than we have seen in this generation . . . not settling for what they could get, but making the SMART, RIGHT and EXCITING plays that Kyle Shanahan's Offense was known for in Houston. Even when the Saints finally got their offense on track, our Defense stiffened when they needed to, and the Offense put the game away like previous versions have failed to do in years past. Overall, it was a season opener we can all be proud of!
Now we go on the road again to play a St. Louis Rams team that gave the Detroit Lions all they could handle, taking Matthew Stafford and Megatron to the last 10 seconds before losing a close one. Sam Bradford is a smart young QB, and they have a battering ram of a Running Back in Steven Jackson. But they are NOT the Saints, and our Defense should have gotten a healthy dose of confidence from their performance in Week #1, so I look for us to come out very strong and eager to prove that last week was the real 2012 Washington Redskins!!
IN THE NEWS. . . . . . . . . .
Robert Griffin III was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Griffin led the Redskins to a 40-32 victory over the Saints by completing 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns, with a 139.9 passer rating. He also rushed for 42 yards on 10 carries.
Griffin became the first player in league history to pass for more than 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in his NFL debut.
He also is the first Redskins player to win the award since running back Clinton Portis did it in 2008 after a 145-yard effort against the Philadelphia Eagles. Griffin is the first Redskins rookie to receive the honor since Rod Gardner in Week 6 of the 2001 season.
